Client: Independent Filmmaker
Project Title: No Longer Angel
Objective:
The short film No Longer Angel tells the story of a young woman grappling with her dual identities and their impact on her relationships. The film explores themes of self-discovery, inner conflict, and emotional vulnerability. Our post-production sound work was crucial in reinforcing these themes, helping to convey the protagonist’s fractured sense of self and her emotional struggles. The sound design aimed to immerse the viewer in her internal world, while the music underscored the emotional depth of her journey.
Music Integration:
The music served as a vital emotional anchor throughout the film, reflecting the protagonist’s inner turmoil and moments of clarity. We composed a haunting, minimalist score that alternated between ethereal string sections and atmospheric synths, symbolising the two opposing sides of her identity. The music swelled during moments of intense emotional conflict, emphasizing her struggles, and softened during introspective scenes to convey vulnerability and introspection.
The transitions between musical themes were carefully timed to align with shifts in the protagonist’s emotional state. This dynamic approach helped guide the audience through her journey, amplifying the tension and resolution as she navigated her relationships and inner conflict.
Music Editing and Mixing:
The music was meticulously edited and mixed to ensure it seamlessly complemented the film’s dialogue and sound design. We balanced the score to create a layered soundscape, where the music could rise to prominence during key moments but recede when the dialogue took center stage. The ethereal quality of the music was enhanced through subtle reverb and modulation effects, deepening its emotional resonance.
Sound Design Approach:
The sound design was integral to capturing the protagonist’s fragmented state of mind. For scenes where her identities clashed, we used distorted and layered sound effects—such as overlapping whispers and warped tones—to convey her mental disorientation. These auditory textures created a sense of unease, placing the audience inside her conflicted psyche.
In contrast, moments of emotional clarity were marked by a deliberate reduction in sound, with isolated Foley elements like soft breathing or the ticking of a clock amplifying the stillness. This stark shift in sound design reflected her brief moments of peace, emphasizing their emotional weight.
Transitions between these soundscapes were carefully crafted to maintain the flow of the narrative while heightening the emotional tension. The shifts from chaotic, layered sounds to moments of quiet introspection mirrored the protagonist’s internal struggle and journey toward self-understanding.
Tone and Style:
The tone of the sound design was intimate, raw, and haunting. Every element—from the music to the Foley and sound effects—was designed to reflect the protagonist’s vulnerability and emotional depth. By blending subtle, naturalistic sounds with abstract, atmospheric elements, we created a soundscape that mirrored the protagonist’s inner world and the emotional arc of the story.
