Objective:
The Great Conjunction is an award-winning film that explores the bond between a grandfather and granddaughter as they come together to witness a rare celestial event. Beneath the shared wonder of the stars, dark family secrets gradually surface, testing their relationship and reshaping their understanding of one another. The sound design played a crucial role in heightening the emotional depth of their journey and juxtaposing the awe-inspiring beauty of the cosmos with the haunting revelations of the past.

Music Integration:
The film’s music underscored the emotional connection between the characters and the cosmic scale of the great conjunction. We composed a sweeping yet intimate score, blending soft piano and strings with celestial synth tones. The music conveyed both the wonder of the celestial event and the growing tension as secrets unraveled.

Lush, harmonic themes accompanied the stargazing scenes, emphasizing the bond between the grandfather and granddaughter. As the story darkened, the music shifted to dissonant, minor tones, reflecting the unease and conflict that emerged. The score’s transitions were carefully synchronized with the film’s emotional beats, ensuring it enhanced the narrative’s pacing and impact.

Sound Design Approach:
The sound design was integral in creating the film’s contrasting atmospheres—serene yet ominous. For the outdoor stargazing scenes, we crafted a rich soundscape featuring gentle night breezes, rustling leaves, and distant animal calls. These ambient sounds reinforced the sense of wonder and peace under the night sky.

As the story turned toward darker revelations, the soundscape evolved to include subtle, unsettling elements such as low-frequency rumbles, distant echoes, and faint, distorted whispers. These auditory cues subtly foreshadowed the tension and unearthed truths, creating an undercurrent of unease.

Key moments, such as flashbacks or emotional confrontations, were marked by heightened sound effects—such as creaking wood, slamming doors, or the amplified ticking of a clock—to reflect the growing emotional weight. This blend of natural and abstract sounds deepened the narrative’s psychological layers and drew the audience further into the characters’ shared experience.

The tone of the sound design was intimate, atmospheric, and emotionally charged. Every sound element was carefully chosen to reflect the film’s dual themes of cosmic wonder and buried familial tension. The music and sound design worked together to create a richly textured auditory experience, immersing the audience in both the awe of the great conjunction and the characters’ unraveling emotional journey.
